Footnotes
  1. Judith Brizendine, widow of Abner, married Henry Mills on 9 July 1804 in Charlotte County, Virginia (see Charlotte County Marriage records on-line at www.Ancestry.com)

The Slate Creek Church Minutes discuss an incident (page 8) whereby "Bro. John Brazedine came forward and made confession that he and Thomas Brazendine went to Henry Mills and Mills run off and they moved part of said Mills property and their Mother to his house by the consent of their Mother.  And he acknowledges he both sed and done wrong and was sorrow for it and the church forgave him" (recorded on May 15, 1819).  On June 19, 1819, Thomas made his church "confession". "Judah" Mills is also listed as a member of the church on page 4.

These two sources together suggest fairly strongly that John and Thomas were the sons of Abner and Judith Brizendine.
  2. 1850 US Census, Cocke, Tennessee
  3. See Slate Crrek Church Minutes above
  4. This record seems to be the only indication of John's birth year, and the only knowledge that he survived past 1850.
  5. 1850 US Census, District 13, Jefferson, Tennessee; Roll: M432_885; Page: 448; Image: 578.
This record seems to be the only indication of Thomas's birth year, and the only knowledge that he survived past 1850.
  6. Clem "Briginden" was living in Cocke Co Tennessee per the 1830 census near John "Brigendine", Thomas "Brigindine", and Henry and Judith Mills.  The fact that all four families are close to each other in the same county further establishes grounds for close family ties.
  7. Information on Abner Brizendine received by Kim Brizendine from Brizendine researcher Anita Berk in August 2000.  Abner's birth: (1756 – 1762).  Since he was charged with tax on the 1783 Essex Co., Virginia tax list, he had to be at least 21, and therefore had to have been born before 1762.  His father John’s will was written in 1777, and Abner was described as not yet 21.  Therefore he was born after September 15, 1756.

Abner was on the Essex County, Virginia tax list in 1783.  He is not listed again in Essex until 1786, about when his first child was born.  He probably married Judith during this period, although it could have been earlier.  He is on the Essex Co. tax lists again every year from 1786 to 1791, after which he moved to ?.  In 1791 he deeded a small part of their land to Isaac Brizendine.  He is on the Charlotte Co., Virginia tax list every year from 1795 - 1800.  The 1795 record for Charlotte Co, VA reads as follows: "1 tithe, 1 horse; 4/7 Abner (1), 4/26 Isaac (Overseer); near William and Isaac Jr".
