Vital Information living Early Life For most of my life I lived on a 20-acre farm just outside of Twin Falls, Idaho. There I had chores such as feeding the animals, weeding, picking grapes, carrying wood, burning trash, and digging ditches, just for starters. I had a happy childhood. I enjoyed watching and playing sports, going to the family cabin, playing with cousins when they came to visit (all four of my grandparents lived very close), and going on family vacations from afternoon swimming trips to longer trips to places like California and Hawaii. I learned to play the piano and the violin and performed in church, community groups, and the school orchestra and choir. I was brought up in a good Mormon family, participated in boy scouts, and attended seminary. As I got older, I learned how to write programs for our family's computer and also did a little music composing and arranging at home. I decided at an early age that I wanted to be involved in both computers and composing in life. My high school years included dating, spending time with friends, music, and working toward good grades. My father got me started in investing with the money he helped me save from selling sheep and working on the farm. I also worked full time during the summers. Leaving Home I was accepted into Brigham Young University on an academic scholarship in the summer of 1988 and began taking computer and music classes. After my freshman year I was called by the LDS church to serve as a full-time missionary for two years in the Pusan, South Korea area. When I returned from Korea in August 1991, I went back to BYU. I quickly realized I could not get a degree in both computer science and music composition (my real love), so I focused on the former so I would have money to some day support a wife and children. I still took some fun classes like ballroom dancing and volleyball, and I enjoyed group activities, dating, and doing goofy things with roommates. My last few years of college were a time of serving in the church and sharing several compositions for choir, instruments, and piano. When my schooling was nearly complete, my sister's husband Eric Magnusson got me an internship (with great pay) at Intel in American Fork. I went full-time after my graduation in April 1994. In 1995 I bought a 5-bedroom home in Orem. It was in the local singles ward of my Orem stake that I met my future bride, Cheryl Guymon. We began dating and courting, which continued even after she left home to go to school at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. I proposed to her on March 1st, 1996 and we were married the following July. Family Life Before our children began arriving, I took a leave of absence from Intel in 1997 to pursue my composing. When I went back to programming in 1998, I did both consulting from home as well as working for several companies in the valley. In 2004 I made a career change, leaving computers to pursue real estate investing and to more seriously work at selling music compositions. I was able to organize a choir just before Janae was born that performed my original cantata in the Provo Tabernacle. I also began teaching music composition in some community classes in 2004. My work schedule has always allowed me to spend plenty of time with my wife and wonderful children. While our children have been young, we have gone on many short and a few longer trips that have been both fun and educational. We have enjoyed visiting family members all over the country, and we try to attend reunions and get-togethers whenever possible. Our family moved to a slightly larger home in American Fork When Janae was one year old. There Cheryl and I have enjoyed serving in the church and sharing our love of music. |
